Hello everybody! Since I dropped off the face of the planet in October, I've been hulled up in my secret laboratory, cooking up something special. Now, I present thee... Moonkid!
Moonkid is a game/animation hybrid (a medium I call "Promenade"). Your only mission is to walk around and watch events unfold. You aren't the hero, and you don't influence the final outcome. So it sits in a gray-area between game and film. I want to give a shout-out to Ryan Sandvik and Michael Reed for helping me develop the concept. I never would have mashed these two mediums together without them.
At its core, Moonkid is a story about fatalism and human nature. You play as a child in a sleepy neighborhood, unaware that the world is about to come to a sudden end. Each of the town's seven residents goes about a full day, and you can follow whoever seems most interesting. Every player will have a different experience, depending on what they decide to focus on.
UPDATE: The fine folks at popmatters.com wrote a article about this game and it's themes. You can read it here.

Behind-The-Scenes Notes:
This was the most complex game I've worked on to date. Every character needed to live a full day (thirteen and a half minutes). That's over an hour and a half of content to produce. Wowza!
The scope of this game also gave rise to several bugs (most of which have been patched). So, if you played this game on day-one and got stuck in a chair, I formally apologize!
Just wanted to know if there was a way to get a download of the song of when your in the parents house. It was very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHello! I'm glad you enjoyed the soundtrack which was composed by BlazingDragon. That specific song is called "Beautiful Memories". You can download a copy of it here: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/170637
DeleteBe sure to follow BlazingDragon on Newgrounds too. He posts great stuff!
Cheers,
-Mike

Hi Tiger Tang!
DeleteThanks for sharing that!! I'm always excited to watch Let's Plays (even if I can't speak Chinese). I'm glad you liked the game :-)
Ok so I have read through some of your comments on newgrounds.com where I found this game. (amazing game BTW none other like it) Buuuuuut in some of your comments you put *SPOILER* ending. i 1st noticed in you reply to the composer of the music you use, BlazingDragon. What is this *SPOILER* ending you speak of. Is this at different ending to what plays out???
ReplyDeleteHi Anon. I'm glad you enjoyed the game! The *spoiler* ending I was referring to was Eugene's death. I didn't want to give that away in the comments section, for the sake of people who hadn't played the game yet.
DeleteCheers,
-Mike
Thanks for the reply Mike, honestly I didn't think I would get an answer :) and as far as the reply aww well one could hope. I would love to see another like this game(if you could call it a game because it was so much more) Keep up the great work friend.
ReplyDeleteCheers to you to sir,
-Big Fan

DeleteAmazing work! really enjoyed the concept of being a bystander while everything happens, after watching it from all the points of view i kinda wished for some kind of punishment for Gretchen even though i guess they all die because of the moonin', and also why was the Drifter digging a hole? was it for Eugene's corpse?.
ReplyDeleteAnyway Congratulations for your work! happy new year and greetings from Chile :)!
Thanks, Unknown from Chile! I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
DeleteI'll let you in on some behind-the-scenes: originally, the game was going to be one minute longer. In the extended version, Gretchen got knocked down by the earthquakes, and spent her last moments begging for mercy. Ultimately, I decided to cut it because it just seemed too cruel.
My biggest regret is not doing more with the Drifter. He gave the shovel to Josh in the extended script, which would have been a better ending in retrospect.
Hope that gives you a little insight into my strange writing process ;-)
Happy new year, mate!
-Mike
Haven't use blogger in years, now i get it! i am the unknown chilean fan :)
Deleteand yeah i'd love a bit more space for the Drifter or a little change! especially when the Drifter says "i hate this part" or something like that and then he giving the shovel to Josh that would have been amazing, really painful but perfect! still i liked how everything went even tho it was "unfair" it was life afterall!
why was the mother preparing to ditch her son before the father came back with the flowers?
ReplyDeletei don't understand what the meaning behind that was.
